Study in India Programme

Study in India is a unique initiative of the Government of India that would facilitate the student fraternity from all across the globe to come and experience the best of academic learning from the top institutions in India.

The Indian higher education system today has a network of 38,000 colleges and 800 universities which are ranked by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) – an organization that assesses and accredits higher education Institutions in India – and by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), both under the aegis of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.

Under the umbrella of Study in India programme, about 150 select higher educational institutes in India are offering quality education and research facilities to international students in a wide range of courses that range from the latest advancements in science and technology, Virtual and Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Computing to name a few, to traditional subjects, such as Ayurveda, Yoga, Sanskrit and Hindi literature.


i. To improve the soft power of India as a tool in diplomacy.

ii. To boost the number of inbound International students in India.

iii. To double India’s market share of global education exports from less than 1 percent to 2 percent.

iv. Increase in contribution of international student in the form of direct spends, indirect spends, spillover effects.

v. Improvement in overall quality of higher education.

vi. Increase in global ranking of India as educational destination.

vii. To reduce the export – Import imbalance in the number of International students.

viii. Growth of India’s global market share of International students.

Criteria for Admission:

The criteria for admission would be scores obtained in the 12th class examination/ SAT scores.

English Proficiency:

The medium of instruction across all courses and institutions would be English. The candidates applying for the courses in India are supposed to have a functional knowledge of English, which implies that they should have an ability to read, write and speak the language.

Fees Waiver:

The proposed fee waivers to meritorious foreign students in this policy will be decided by the Institute concerned based on the following criteria:

i. 100% waiver of tuition fees only for the top 25% students.

ii. 50% waiver of tuition fees only for the next 25% students.

iii. 25% waiver of tuition fees only for the next 25% students.

iv. No waiver of tuition fee for remaining 25% of students.


1. What will be the medium of Instruction?

The medium of instruction across all courses and institutions would be English.

2. How economic is it to Study in India?

Among the top 30 countries for internationally inbound students according to a UNESCO report, India is one of the most economically viable countries for foreign students.

3. Are the degrees awarded in the name of university or the college?

Colleges may be Autonomous i.e. empowered to examine their own degrees, up to the PhD level in some cases , or non-autonomous, in which case their examination are under the supervision of the university to which they are affiliated; in either case, however, degrees are awarded in the name of the university rather than the college.

4. What is the travel ecosystem like in India?

India’s rail network is the 4th longest and the most heavily used system in the world, according to World Bank Report, transporting 8.225 billion passengers. You could also use the roadways connecting most of the cities by upgraded network of national highways across the country.


A dedicated portal for Study in India Programme was launched on 18 April 2018 by the External Affairs Minister, Smt. Sushma Swaraj, and the Minister for State for Human Resource Development, Shri Satya Pal Singh.

This portal is one-stop shop for foreign students seeking to study in India. It provides all the information one needs on educational institutions in India, how to plan their studies, how to stay in India, what kind of events are planned, application process among others. The portal also has a helpline number to address queries from students.

Interested applicants are required to register on ‘Study in India’ Portal to gain access to premier colleges in India and locate and interact with the partner institutes across India via their ‘Study in India’ account.
