JNICC, Embassy of India, Jakarta Presents Chhau Dance Performance in Riau Solo and Jakarta to Mark 75 Years of India-Indonesia Diplomatic Relations
As part of the celebrations marking 75th years of diplomatic relations between India and Indonesia, JNICC, Embassy of India in Jakarta is arranging a dance troupe cultural
performance by the Chhau Dance Group from Giridhar Kala Kendra, led by Mr. Gambir Chandra Mahato consisting of eight talented artists.
The Chhau dance, known for its unique blend of martial and folk traditions, originates from India and has three main styles named after their regions: Purulia Chhau from West Bengal, Seraikella Chhau from Jharkhand, and Mayurbhanj Chhau from Odisha. The dance is performed with expressive masks and costumes, especially in the Purulia and Seraikella styles. Chhau dancers depict legendary tales from Indian epics such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata, bringing characters to life with vibrant storytelling and physical artistry.
The Chhau dance troupe will perform at three different locations in Indonesia. Their tour willbegin with a performance on November 13 in Kerinci, Riau followed by a second performance on November 15-16 in Solo, Central Java. The final show will take place in Jakarta as part of the Diwali celebrations on November 17, 2024.
This initiative will strengthen cultural connections between India and Indonesia, highlighting both nations commitment to cultural exchange and mutual understanding.
