Press Release: India Culture Week commences in Surabaya from 7-14 September 2018 

            The Embassy of India in association with the City Government of Surabaya, and Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is organizing an India Culture Week in Surabaya from 07-14 September 2018. The Indian culture week will showcase different facets of Indian tourism, arts, culture, music, food, Yoga and films spread over the week. The India Culture Week will be jointly inaugurated by Surabaya city leadership along Rector of UNAIR and Embassy officials on 7th September 2018. 


2. To promote bilateral tourism, Embassy will organize the inaugural mega event “Visit India” Tourism Seminar at Hotel Shangri-La Surabaya from 1000 - 1200 hrs. The Seminar will showcase various aspects of tourism in India. It is expected to be attended by 10 prominent Indian tours and companies in addition to nearly 50 local travel agents from Surabaya and around. The event will provide B2B meetings opportunity as well to tour and travel companies of Surabaya and also help in promoting Surabaya as tourism destination.  


3. Embassy would also be organizing an ‘Indian Culture Evening – Bollywood Dance Group and Cultural Music Performances’ on 7th September evening. The event will be held at the main lobby of Campus C, UNAIR from 1900 - 2100 hrs. The program will showcase the wide variety of Indian culture dance forms with a mix of popular movie songs, classical music, Bollywood dances and cultural events. 


4. Embassy of India and Hotel Shangri-La Surabaya has also partnered to bring delicious Indian cuisine to Surabaya. An “Indian Food Festival” will be inaugurated by Surabaya Government Leadership and Embassy officials at Hotel Shangri-La on 7th September at 1230 hours. The food festival will remain open till 14th September 2018 at Shangri-La Hotel. An Indian chef has been deployed specially for preparing authentic Indian delicacies, curries and sweets.  Indian food is known world over for its rich aroma, taste and great degree of variety and will be available to Surabaya food lovers. 


5.  I n addition, a photo-exhibition cum Kite Exhibition on “Shared Cultural Heritage of India & Indonesia” will be on display at the Main Library Hall, Ground Floor, Campus B of UNAIR from 7-21 September.  The photo-exhibition showcases Islamic Architectural Heritage of India and the Kites specially created on the common theme of Ramayana and Mahabharata, as a part of the Joint kite exhibition put up by Museum Layang Layang Jakarta and Patang Museum Ahmedabad Gujarat India. The Kite exhibition was jointly inaugurated earlier in end May by Honorable Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi and His Excellency President of Republic of Indonesia Bapak Joko Widodo at Monas in Jakarta. It will be its first presentation outside Jakarta in Surabaya. 


6. An Indian Film Festival will also be held from 7-14 September at Campus B Auditorium of UNAIR. In this weeklong film festival, Embassy is screening seven of India’s latest Bollywood hits like English Vinglish; Tanu Weds Manu; Love Aaj Kal; Barfi; Chennai Express; Hum Saath Sath Hain and Rock On. All of these movies have been successful globally and will be available for viewing by cinema lovers in Surabaya. The movies have been dubbed in Bahasa Indonesia. 


7. In addition, a special post event celebrating the 4th International Day of Yoga, which annually falls on 21 June, will be organized at the UNAIR Campus C by the lake side, in the early morning of 7th September. More than 400 students and faculty are expected to participate in the Yoga Session, which would be conducted by an Indian Yoga Teacher from Jawaharlal Nehru Cultural Center of the Embassy of India in Jakarta. 


8. A detailed schedule of events with date, time and venue of each event is attached.


9.  It is expected that the week-long events planned under the India Culture Week would facilitate a better understanding and appreciation of India in the hearts and minds of Surabaya People. The Embassy of India is deeply appreciative of the support and facilitation provided by leadership of Provincial Government of East Jawa and Universitas Airlangga Surabaya in organizing the India Culture Week Celebrations.
